take the front plate off , then you will see the reduction gears and the clips , this ate them :D

once the hub is off with the shaft attached you will have a lot more movement of the uj to get at the bearings.the parts you replace are on the tee where it occelates unless its gone too far and worn the holes in the jaws on the ends of the shafts in which case the shafts will need to go to an engineering shop to be repaired. make sure you have something to take the weight of the hub and shaft because there bloody heavy

if your only repairing the play in the ujs theres no need to strip the hub in your first pick there doesnt seem to be any oil leaking from the driveshaft seals,the ones in the axle housing are easy to do once the shaft is out and you might as well change them while it s apart biggest job i had was getting the pins out that hold the hub on

Think what I've decided is to get the steering bits off and then take everything to a agricultural engineer and get them to do it. I was going to get them to do the uj anyway.
I suppose you would replace both uj's?

have a quick look on youtube lots of vids on there about repairing ujs and will show you step by step the things i have explained once its out it will look much easier to do

I can do them, I did them at agricultural collage in the 80's. Infact I did one on my haybob last year.
Just thought I'd get the professionals to do it for peace of mind.

Well got it off tonight, a right bugger. The bar that joins the two hubs together came off ok thanks to the advice given on here.
The steering ram how ever was a right pain. What I couldn't understand was i thought i had done the steering ram seals years ago so I must of had it off before. Is there a knack to them?

You will need to replace the seals in the axle as the way you allowed the hub to hang will have damaged them, to be honest your pictures are a textbook demonstration of how not to do it. The steering bits should have come off first then the endplate then the shaft retaining clips and finally the hub should have been supported while the swivel pins are removed and kept parallel either with a trolley jack or better a small garage crane from above while being carefully pulled back leaving the shaft in the axle. Letting it hang damages the seals and possible the sealing surface on the shaft which can easily end up with nicks in it especially if you then try to beat other stuff off with it hanging. If you have damaged the shaft surface you can get a thing called a speedisleeve to press on to repair it. it looks as though it might be a carraro design axle so seals etc can be bought from other places that use the same axle. It's important to ensure the bottom swivel pin seal is good otherwise the rain gets into it especially if it's an older axle with roller bearings as opposed to the later ball type which is more tolerant. The UJ's are not the hollow spoke standard pto shaft grade with grease nipples though these will fit. However the original ones are beefier in the centre with no grease nipple and much stronger. There is a risk the ones with the grease nipple will break given the load on them on a digger.
