Thatís how it will work in my head too
The ram on the shear at the yard Has a two speed valve on it so when itís closing but not cutting it puts oil in the back of the ram and the oil it displaces...

It is a lift axle but I donít lift it only for more traction think itís a DAF build as I canít see the join or any flitch plates in the chassis itís not a super big Crane only 38 tonne meter will...

You are right the rear axle is further back only seen on other like it
It means that the steering geometry is correct as in the same as a standard DAF but longer wheel base so can still get under...
