This kinda thing boils my blood. We had a attempted break in a few month back and one of the neighbors called at 2am to tell us someone was snooping around and I went down but they were gone. They Tried to break a padlock but failed and disappeared . I called the cops and they gave me a lecture about trying to stop them and not calling the police in the first instance. Nothing stolen that time but you know they were trying to. Price of scrap going up again will encourage the theiving c*#ts to go on the scrounge.
