Modern machines just don't sound like they mean business. I can remember early in the morning, back in the 70's, hearing scrapers being pushed by dozers over a mile away when they pushed the motorway though near us.

yeh they pushed/cut a by-pass through virtually all bank for a good 4 miles just outside the town here, early '70s and lived about 1/3 of a mile from it ..... could hear those scrapers and cats kick off at 07.00 every morning

Turbos took the individuality out of most exhaust notes but those Detroit two strokes were in a league of their own.
In the UK manufactured noise league the Commer TS3 and two-stroke Fodens took a lot of beating.
This vid is a bit of a mess but the sound's not bad!

Here's a much better vid of the Foden. A reminder of just how much hard work there was to driving a wagon of that era.

The noise out of those engines seems to be loved or hated, I fall into the later catorgery. Listening to them makes me feel sick, never been able to understand how anyone could actualy like it.

To me it sounds like it's revving its arse off, I can't say I like it. Annoys me when family members Hit 3000 Rpm in diesel cars however so I'm a little finniky.

Fodens with the Big Cat engines are nice
