Tony i Know that, but the engine started by bad vibration and then after a while the thing exploded. A broken crank could set off a big end failure.
We used to rebuild Scania DS 8 engines. went to look at a truck that had only done 1200 hrs on a rebuild, it was vibrating badly on low idle. After a while is was apparent the crank was broken. When we stripped it down i found that the radiai were over ground on the failed journal. Never used Guildford auto's again.

Tim I get my peepers on lots of motors, Justyn the Skinflint loves Generators with Mullered motors, as they are worthless as a knacker, so he gets me to sort them, the engine in the test-bed is a Vee set motor with 2 rods on 1 pin, when 1 rod sets free it near always takes the other rod off line resulting in both sides of the Block knocked all to hell, the question would be, what set the first rod free??? broken Crank I would not think the cause, the engine was rather reluctant to Die the Death running on only a few cylinders after the big Bang??, the snapped Cranks that I have come up against, the engines ran with Vibration, but would all stop and re start, AEC 690/760's, Leyland 680PP, Cat 3306/3406, ???

Yes i see what you mean. I haven't seen many broken cranks to be fair. The old drott BD 281 engines i think only had 3 mains now if you ground them to plus 30 they did break.
