When you moved over to France, did you buy a house out there to live in?.
I like France very much, been there a few times Normandy mostly.
Did you find it hard to get along with the locals, friends of mine found the French very objective towards them being British!.

Yes we bought ourselves a house.
Re racism... with an odd exception people have been spot on - there is always one or two though, rednecks mainly , every immigrant since year dot will have encountered it. Speaking the language is key, kids help you integrate... But its a really big ask and return rate is very high, I absolutely wouldn't have come if Id had know what it was going to take to settle in and set up a business in a country full of bureaucrats and get established, luckily we havent anywhere to go back to when its tough unless we would have ended up back there......... things seem to have panned out though and we would have to be dragged back now.

Wouldn't recommend it though.

That's the trouble with us Brits, we go every where around the world and expect them to speak to us in English.

Cyprus, my mum n dad bought a flat out in Cyprus, I've been over there several times, the locals are the friendliest people you could meat, unless your that argent to expect them to speak to you in English with out even attempting to be polite enough to say good morning in there native language.

I have seen it for my self on more then one occasion,
We would walk into a shop, say hello in Greek, then the rest of the conversation would be in English, with the odd Greek coming out, and the final thank you and good day in Greek again.

Expats walk in not even a hello or good morning in Greek. And you can see the attitude change behind the counter instantly, even to the point that 99 percent of the time they get charged more for the same thing.

I don't speak Greek or French, but I can be polite in both languages as not to offend people.

Prime example, we needed to change some plugs on some electrical bits mum had bought.
Walk in to the local electrical store, say good morning in Greek,
The chap sorted us out with some adaptation plugs, cost about 50p each.

Expat walks in with some gadget with the wrong plugs on, argent again not even hello.
We can change them for you sir, 3.50 each one.

That is a real shame. It must have been a huge decision to emigrate, then to find it is that tough you wouldn't reccomend it. Glad it appears to be working out now.

This may be a bit negative but when I started out on my own it seemed like everyone was hoping I'd fail. Even got people offering to buy my kit off me for cheap, like they were helping me out or something?

Anyone who can start on their own in the UK has my respect as I don't consider they chose the easy way!

No we love it now ........ just had no idea how hard it would be at times to get everything sorted ... setting up in the u.k with all your contacts may be tough but into another country/culture/language with no contacts..... its a major challenge - maybe to not recommend it is a bit strong but its not for everyone.
