Default Is this a suicide bid?

Sisk wins Scottish road job with half price bid

A joint venture between John Sisk and Irish civil engineer Roadbridge has won the contract to upgrade the M9 Junction with a bid of £25.6m compared to the original budget of between £45m to £65m.

Client Transport Scotland is delighted to cut at least £20m from the cost of improving Junction 1a near Kirkliston as part of the Forth Replacement Crossing project.

But stunned major rivals will point to another case of low-cost bidding as the construction market becomes increasingly competitive.

Sisk and Roadbridge beat three rivals to win the job – Morrisson Construction and joint ventures between Balfour Beatty and Morgan Sindall and Sir Robert McAlpine with Costain.

Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil said: “Today’s announcement that the preferred bid for the M9 Junction 1a contract is substantially under budget demonstrates further significant savings for the public purse.

“While it is clear that the current construction market is highly competitive, this is also testament to Transport Scotland’s robust procurement and project management.”

sounds a bit desperate to me, at that much discount this can only be to keep the firm afloat while times are tough, cant be profit in that

Roadbridge is owned by Jamie Mulkerr son of P mulkerr one of the largest contractors in Ireland. Mulkerrs work 14 hr days and run their men hard. Old man mulkerr will pay or used to pay any money to get good men on his machines. He owned 70 odd Volvo ADTs at one time, they don't hardly stop all day they really can move mountains. Sisk are nick named NO RISK SISK another Irish out fit who are renouned for sqeezing their contractors, I completed a 300K job for them in 09, Worked hard for them then even harder for three hours in a room thrashing out my valuation.... Was 3 and sometimes four of them and me...I did put over a good case and got what i was happy with.
If two companies can make this job pay then these two will. God nows how many extras they will claim to bring the price back up but they will.
It will be intereting to see how Mulkerr gets his claims against Sisk.
