Small private purchases, like a few quid up to a few hundred or more would mean you have to go away and process payment into the vendors account.

How many can you think of.
Having no cash could help stamp out drug dealing and theft of course,
What about these new mobile phones which you can use for small payments

A pal of mine bought a i-pad for his brother with his i-tunes account

Interesting aside on non-debasable (i.e. governments can't print more of the stuff, thereby devaluing it) currency: http://bitcoin.org/

As for banks, we switched from a "Too Big to Fail" (TBTF) bank in 2006 to a little know Swedish bank, Svenska Handelsbanken and have been extremely pleased with the quality and accessibility of staff and support. Sweden has it's own banking crisis in the early 90's, so they'd already figured out why it was important to have robustly financed banks and consequently, there was none of the flapping we've witnessed from the TBTF banks used by our customers and suppliers (some of whom were sadly damaged or destroyed by withdrawal of support) when the glocal financial crisis finally hit.

The only downside is they are very, very selective with clients, but then this is perhaps why they are so strong.
