PD 1st pic is actually part of the filling process, we dump the water then use a grader to essentially turn a furrow and add more water and turn it back to mix it properly, then grade off level and compact.

Mart, the subbase on this job is coming from Oman, however there are a lot of quarries in the northern emirates which is probably a 5 hour round trip in a truck. We bring it in 45 m3 trailers and stockpile it at site then shift it around with 6 wheels as and where we need it. Plenty of water normally does it for the formation, depends on the type of sand as well.

Cheers scroff, horses for courses I suppose, it wasn't somewhere I thought I'd end up. Apart from the high cost of living it's a great place, well worth seeing once at least.

Ah, thatís interesting: I guess too dry and itíll be impossible to compact.

You can get dry compaction but the surface won't be bound as well as when mixed with water. A lot of people panic when they see dune sand as they think you won't get compaction, reality is you will get 95% minimum without touching it due to the lack of air voids, only issue is containing it as it will move, put a capping lager over it and it's as good as any material.

Had the paver in the past couple of weeks, laying about 1400 ton of aggregate a shift, hoping to get basecourse asphalt down in the next week.

What's the reason behind using a paver to lay the type 1 Conor as to using a dozer or grader with gps? Just curious to the different methods they use round the world.

Thanks Graham, this job is actually part of the big demo job with my last company/ 1st earthworks job I did with this company, so it's nice to have come full circle having levelled the sand dunes now laying a 12 lane motorway.

Few different reasons Mark, consultants won't allow a grader here for the top layers as they say the material won't pass grading tests due to segregation of the material being pushed with a blade. Other reason is speed, very little GPS here so it's slow going with a dip line and you get a lot more wastage of material. If we can keep the paver running enough material daily we should save around £600,000 on material over the course of the job. The spec has a 10mm tolerance on aggregate, we're aiming for 5mm

Few pictures of the past week, started work on a 2.5km traffic diversion around an existing roundabout to allow the bridge teams to have the working space required to build the 3 main bridges. Also got some prime coat down and hoping to lay the first permanent asphalt in about a week's time has been delayed waiting for mix design approval.
