Default Estimate vs Quote

As title. Whatís the difference.

I stupidly gave a family friend an estimate to dig out an area for them to build a small block of stables (husbands a general builder). And thought I could do with a bit of fill so was thinking along the lines of cost of fuel and machinery with a little on top. Itís roughly 500t of Clay being cut out of a 55degree slope. Iíve had a few hitches with my kit when the first cold blast came over so hired in some. Itís taken over 3 days to dig and cart out and itís only done about 3 quarters. So I reckon a day more. Anyway they keep moaning about it and want it done yesterday. I said itís gone about £500 over what I thought it would cost and the guy has flipped saying I quoted x amount and they only budgeted that much for it (wife probably wants to spend it elsewhere on stables).

I only sent them a text estimating how much and how long itíd take.

Whatís your thoughts?

ask them to show you your written quotation ..... an estimate is just that .... your best guess/estimated cost, of the job.

A quotation is effectively a contract to carry out the works for a fixed price

I thought as much but they were adamant and it was getting heated on the phone.

Yes it's better to fall out for a few days for saying no than fall out for a lifetime over something daft that goes wrong, which is no ones fault.

Is 500 that much extra over and above the original quoted or in this case estimated price. I don't think I ever complete a job for the exact costing or time estimate. Some you win a bit some you lose a bit. You just need to avoid keeping on losing a bit

If there's extras of course that's great

As others have said, a quote amounts to a legally binding contract. An estimated is a best guess.
